BARONESS-INTERVIEW FOR INK 19

c

Baroness!
Growing up together in Lexington, VA., the members of Baroness -- Allen Blickle (drums), Summer Welch (bass), John Baizley (guitars/vocals), and Pete Adams (guitars/vocals) -- knew early on that there was life outside of the Blue Ridge Mountains and that their passion for making music would be the ticket. Their long ride to a record deal and international recognition has been filled with hard roads in search of the rewards.
In 2007, Baroness released their first disc for Relapse Records, Red Album. Touring extensively across the U.S. and Europe created a solid fan base. This, in turn, led to their 2009 follow up, Blue Record, entering Billboard's "Heatseekers" chart at No. 1. Since then, Baroness has continued to play gig after gig, selling out their own shows and opening for major acts such as the Deftones and now Metallica, with whom they will tour Australia in November.
Summer Welch spoke with Ink 19 about getting out of Dodge, the pros and cons of promoting a band in the age of technology, and what it means to hold down the rhythm in the unique music of Baroness.

What were the odds of getting out of that small town?

I know people who grew up there and are still there, working shitty jobs, and maybe they're unhappy. The odds were very slim, but my parents were very, very supportive of my endeavors, and prior to music I was active with sports. I cycled a lot and raced mountain bikes growing up, so there was always something that occupied my time and that I invested my energy into. At 16, I discovered music and punk rock. All my friends played music. Alan and Pete were in a band together and I was envious that they had a band. Nobody in our circle played bass, so I learned to play. Through high school, everyone who is in Baroness now was in a band, playing different genres of music, but we all went separate ways. Everybody had the drive to get out of that small town and do something else. It was obvious to all of us internally that there was much more out there to be done. I moved to Croatia as part of an exchange program, Alan went to college, Pete joined the Army, and John moved to Savannah, Georgia, with his girlfriend because she was going to school there. When I got back from Europe, I didn't want to be in Lexington, so I moved to Savannah. John and I lived together and wrote music, and his girlfriend put up with a lot of shit. They're still together; they have a baby and they've made it work. We all migrated here at different intervals. It's been a long time coming for sure.

How involved are you with social networking?

I am not personally involved. I have a MySpace page but I don't use it often. I use it to connect with people overseas, but I'm not on Facebook or Twitter. The whole social networking thing gives me the creeps. It's a useful tool for bands, and I understand the desire and infatuation and people being obsessed with it, leaving comments like they're friends with you, but they're not. Facebook especially. I have friends who spend a lot of time online chatting and it doesn't seem real to have 800 friends online. When I ask them, "How many people do you see in the flesh?" "Oh, never." "Oh, maybe three times a year." Expectations and relationships become incredibly high because of things like text messaging and the accessibility of social networking. There is no room for patience anymore. You send somebody a message and you want them to get back to you within three hours. I see it in my circle. It has developed insecurity in people. Five years ago, everybody had an answering machine and not that many people had cell phones. You called, left a message, and someone would get back to you in the next two or three days. Society has built itself around faster, faster. Our label runs our Facebook and Twitter pages. They update them, and all I ask is that they don't personalize it to say "we." It's not we. It's them. We have tried hard to preserve ourselves in some way, and it's hard because people want to know "why" with every question. Just enjoy it for what it is and form your own ideas about what you're hearing. Our shows are about music, not who we are, what we're wearing, and what we like to do on the weekends. That's the society we live in. You have to find a balance and appeal to the general populace while maintaining your integrity. It's a fine line to walk, but at the end of the day we follow our hearts and that makes it seem much more legitimate and honest.

Blue Record Cover

For some bands, it's a two-on-two team situation, with the rhythm section on one team and dual guitars on the other team. Having known each other since childhood, does that make it more than the sum of its parts?

With us, yes, it is the sum of four parts. There are moments in the songs when the rhythm section is working together as a driving factor, and sometimes it's the guitars, but I don't separate it too much. We're not solely guitars or bass or drums. It's a mixture of all four of us together, and in my head I never think about it individually. It is what it is, and because we've been together for so long, as you're saying, together and growing so much, I don't know how I think of it anymore. It's just part of us and it's what we do.

KYLESA- ENTREVISTA NA HELLBOUND

Kylesa: The Hellbound Interview

13 December 2010 535 views 2 Comments

On Thursday, December 2nd, Kylesa recently spent a chilly, drizzly night here in Vancouver, playing the Media Club on one night of a two-date Pacific Northwest jaunt, in support of this year’s massive Spiral Shadow album. Before the show, I had the good fortune to sit down with Phillip Cope and Laura Pleasants to discuss the album, ‘The Hit’, and the road.
HELLBOUND: The prevailing theme behind the songs on Spiral Shadow is that of ‘distance’. Was this a theme you had conceived prior to writing the songs for the album?
PHILLIP COPE: Not [when we were writing] the music. We were about halfway through writing [the music] -maybe a little more- and we were getting to the point where we needed to start writing lyrics and [the theme] just kind of… [Interruption by venue bouncer passing out wristbands] This isn’t going to be easy, is it? [laughs]

HB: Did you guys have any lyrics written before you decided on the concept of distance as a skeleton for the album?
PC: Yeah, that’s kind of what helped me think of the theme. The first song I wrote lyrics for, I was just thinking back on, just basically battling with depression, years of battling with it, and finally feeling like I was getting to a place where I getting a grip on it. And that kind of spiraled into thinking more like, ‘Okay, it’d be cool to base each song [on the album] on a different meaning of distance’.

There’s a marked, early-‘90s, indie-rock influence on “Don’t Look Back”. While everybody’s been talking about influences like Pixies and Built To Spill, I’d actually like to know about some of your lesser-known favorite albums from this era/genre…
LP: It’s easy, when people are reading interviews or asking us stuff, to mention bands [who influenced us]. But with us, it’s not really one particular band, or two – it’s a whole conglomerate of different bands and sounds. So yeah, I WAS listening to the new Built to Spill record [at the time], ‘cos I liked it -I was jamming it a lot- but I don’t think it directly influenced me [as far as] writing a particular song. That said, though – Phillip & I have been listening to the Pixies for years.

PC: We had, both of us, separately, on our own, [recently] watched the Pixies documentary [LoudQUIETloud], and…
LP: …And were both quite moved by it.
PC: But the thing is, we didn’t, like, have a discussion about ‘Oh, let’s write a song that sounds like the Pixies’. You know, it was more like ‘I’m gonna put this melody line over the song here’. I remember when it really first got noticed, that “Don’t Look Back” sounded like the Pixies…
LP: …I thought of that immediately, right away, I was like ‘This sounds like the Pixies to me.’
PC: …More and more people were saying it to me [in the studio], and it got to the point where I was like, ‘Well, do I not do it? Or do I just go for it?’ We were thinking about it at the studio, and had a discussion with a few people and it was like, well – the idea’s in place. We can either half-ass the idea or just go for it – and that was when Laura came in with her vocals [for the song], and we started really thinking about what would sound good here and there. So, yeah, it came out kinda Pixies sounding, but it really wasn’t…
LP: …It wasn’t like, super-planned or anything, you know?

Lastly, as the year is coming to a close, I’m curious to know what your favorite albums of the year are…
PC: I love that new Ghost record, have you heard it?
LP: It IS good. I just got that recently; it’s real good.

Okay, that’s pretty much all I’ve got. Thanks for coming back to Vancouver!
LP: Thank you! It’s good to be here. We haven’t been here in a quite a while, so…
Have a great show!
Both: Thanks!

LP: ...

show!obrigado

KYLESA-ENTREVISTA SOBRE O NOVO ALBUM

portuguese and english

Philip Cole and Laura Pleasants fala de cada som do Kylea o album Spiral Shadow.

PHILLIP COPE and LAURA PLEASANTS tell the stories behind each song on
KYLESA’s Spiral Shadow.

Tired Climb
Cope: I designed this song to be the first on the album. I wanted it to have a mixture of elements from our past, and foreshadowing of some of the tripped out nature of the songs to come. My lyrics are about years of tackling depression.

Drop Out
Pleasants: This song started out with the mellow part and was built from there. I was listening to a lot of mid-‘70s era [Black] Sabbath and was studying some of their uncommon song structures. I wanted something intense and something where the drums could be really pounding and tribal. I like how this song has a lot of groove and peaks and valleys. Lyrically, "Drop Out" is about being completely fed up with everything to the point where you just don't care anymore and want nothing to do with anyone or anything. You try to erase everything to find the answer. Press delete and start again.

kylesa1.jpg (576×382)

Don't Look Back
Cope: This song was kind of challenge for myself to see if I could write something more straightforward and traditional. It really wasn't supposed to sound poppy or like ‘90s alternative, but after I put the guitar harmony on, everyone started to notice it was sounding a bit different than our normal stuff. Someone mentioned it kind of sounded like the Pixies, so instead of fighting it, we just kind of embraced it. The lyrics are about realizing sometimes it's better to forget the past and move on than dwell on things from your past.
Pleasants: The original middle guitar line I did sounded too "southern" to Phillip, so I re-routed and very quickly came up with the melody. Sometimes the simple stuff you come up with off the cuff works out the best.

Spiral Shadow
Pleasants: This is another song that is very dear to me, and it's the second song I've ever written for anyone. I knew I wanted to write a song for my mom, and this is it. This one took a long time to come together. I have several versions of this with different riffs in it. I kind of modeled it after some ‘70s rock vibes, and that was the tone I was going for. Lyrically, “Spiral Shadow” reads as somewhat abstract, and that's how I wanted it. I was very happy with some of the tones I got for the lead parts. I had a few very rad distortion pedals to work with, and some wonderful vintage tube amps to howl through.

Cope: This song was by far the hardest and most time consuming to mix, but I was stoked on it by the end.
